Calvary Temple's threefold reason for being is to be a corporate body of believers empowered by the Holy Spirit to worship the risen Christ in spirit and truth; to equip each member for life ministry through the teaching and training of God's Word; and to evangelize the world according to the principles of Acts 1:8 -- to be a balanced ministry of Worship, Word, and Witness reaching out to South Philadelphia and the metropolitan area.
The church exists in two forms: the universal, invisible church comprised of all born again believers worldwide in all generations and the local, visible church. (Matt. 16:18, Heb. 12:22-24, 1 Cor. 12:12-13, Phil. 1:1, and Rev. 1-3)
The New Testament Local Church Body is more than a fellowship of believers getting together. It has God-ordained, Spirit-anointed leadership for oversight, guidance and protection, as well as congregational leadership. Every true believer is called to ministry and has been given one or more spiritual gifts for Kingdom purposes. It is the purpose of church leadership (pastors, elders, deacons, etc.) to develop the ministry of the individual believer and to not just do the ministry themselves. (Eph. 4:11-16, 1 Tim. 3:1-13, Romans 12:1-8, 1 Cor. 12)
Calvary Temple views itself not as a denomination but as a vital part of the universal body of Christ and a visible local expression of Christ's Body. We are part of the "Cooperative Fellowship" known as the Assemblies of God, which provides accountability and united ministry in the sending of missionaries worldwide. Calvary Temple is also an active part of a network of local churches in South Philadelphia of various affiliations whose pastors unite regularly for specific prayer for South Philadelphia and the metropolitan area.
We believe that every born again believer who considers Calvary Temple their home church is a spiritual member of the local body. Official church membership is extended to all believers who have committed to complete the pastor's membership class, support the church and its mission, and are in harmony with the vision and doctrinal position of Calvary Temple.
